Ege Kolcu is a Deaf sculptor and interdisciplinary artist from Istanbul, Turkey. His practice focuses on sculpture, printmaking, and conceptual forms rooted in silence, symbolism, and non-verbal communication. Working primarily with marble and sculptural materials, he develops works that explore embodied perception, gesture, and visual language through Deaf culture and De’VIA influences.
Kolcu continues his artistic research between Istanbul, Bodrum, and Carrara, Italy, where he studies marble production and sculptural processes. His work investigates neo-symbolism, communication beyond spoken language, and the relationship between visibility and silence.
Artist’s Statement
My work explores silence as a visual and physical language. As a Deaf artist, I am interested in how meaning can exist beyond spoken communication through gesture, material, form, and absence. Sculpture becomes a space where emotions, memory, and identity are translated into symbolic structures.
I work mainly with marble and sculptural materials because of their physical resistance, historical weight, and timeless presence. Through sculpture and conceptual forms, I investigate Deaf culture, non-verbal communication, and the body as a communicative site. My practice combines studio production with theoretical research, often focusing on neo-symbolism and embodied perception.
